Catwoman Is Officially Coming Out of the Closet Now

DC Comics isn't just scratching the surface on equal representation of LGBT characters in comics, they're breaking new ground.

Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, Batman’s stealthy enemy and love interest, officially came out as bisexual this week.

In the latest issue of the DC Comics, Catwoman #39, Kyle kisses another woman, ending decades of fan rumors and speculation by stating canonically that the character is, in fact, bisexual.

Comic book writer Genevieve Valentine penned a blog post explaining the scene in which Selina is seen kissing Eiko Hasigawa, who has taken on the mantle of Catwoman in recent months, while Selina has taken on the role of a crime boss.

"She's flirted around it -- often quite literally -- for years now," she wrote. "For me, this wasn't a revelation so much as a confirmation."

Valentine also responded to critics who wondered what this revelation could mean for Batman.

“Please be assured that Selina’s longstanding connection to Batman has not been forgotten; that is not how bisexuality (or humanity) works.” she added.

Catwoman has been around for 75 years (her first appearance was in Batman #1 in 1940), and she is not the first DC Comics character to come out. Batwoman was reintroduced as a lesbian character in 2006 and the Green Lantern was also reinvented as gay in 2012.

Though she's not the first, she's certainly still an icon (if not the biggest icon).
