Before she brought the creation of Wonder Woman to the big screen with Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, writer/director Angela Robinson crafted comic books of her own. After helming a pair of peppy action-comedies with D.E.B.S. and Herbie Fully Loaded, she moved into television, working as a writer, director, and producer on thrilling shows like The L Word, True Blood and How To Get Away With Murder. In 2009, the long time superhero fan who proudly had Wonder Woman on her lunchbox got to tell her own fantastical tale, writing DC Comics miniseries The Web.

Teamed with artist Roger Robinson (Batman: Gotham Knights), Robinson spun a story of self-centered rich boy on the hunt for his brother’s killers. She wrote four issues over the course of that year, and it was around that time that she began developing Professor Marston and the Wonder Women — which demanded tons of research into the man who wrote the first Wonder Woman comics, William Marston, and his collaborators/inspiration: wife Elizabeth Holloway Marston and their mutual lover, Olive Byrne. In an in-depth interview, CBR spoke with Robinson about her insight into the film, and also took the opportunity to inquire about her potential future in comics, and the comic book movie she’s working on next.

Asked if she had any ambition to return to writing comics, Robinson considered, “Maybe. I just love the medium. I would definitely like to do that sometime. I guess it’s just a definite maybe. I would love to do it. It’s just figuring out in between all my other jobs. I would love to go back.”

Perhaps DC might bring her in to pen a Wonder Woman story of her own? But don’t anticipate such a dream pairing anytime soon. Robinson has her plate full promoting Professor Marston and the Wonder Women‘s release (and hopefully award season push) while beginning the scripting phase of her in-development adaptation of Terry Moore’s Strangers In Paradise, which boasts a complicated love triangle that’s further complicated by $850,000 in missing mob cash.

The film version of this acclaimed comic was officially announced last month, along with news that Moore and Robinson are working together on its translation to film. Asked how that’s progressing, Robinson claimed she and Moore aren’t considering the cast yet, but said, “I’m so excited. Literally, I’ve been talking to Terry Moore for a decade. I read Strangers in Paradise sometime in the early 2000s, and I just remember I couldn’t put it down. I loved the story so much, and I think he is just a beautiful storyteller. It’s so awesome.”

Robinson suggested the adaptation has been discussed by the duo for years, saying, “I finally called him back recently, and I’m like, ‘Well, let’s do it!’ It finally worked out, so we’re collaborating on the script. We just started working on it. So we have to see it come together, because I love it, and I really want to put it on screen.”

Directed by Angela Robinson and starring Luke Evans, Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote, Professor Marston and the Wonder Woman is now in theaters.
