DC Rebirth’s Aquaman Design Was Almost Inspired by Momoa’s DCEU Version

According to artist Brad Walker, the Aquaman Rebirth series very nearly drew inspiration from Jason Momoa’s interpretation of the character from Justice League.

When Walker helped to launch the current series alongside writer Dan Abnett, he created designs for Arthur Curry that combined the traditional color scheme of Aquaman with Momoa’s more warrior-like depictionThe proposed tribal tattoos and intricate battle armor resulted in a design that looks rather similar to the character’s look in the 1990s.

Don't think I ever posted these. Early round of #aquaman designs when we thought we would need to lean into the movie look. Ended up going more classic though, which I probably like better, anyway. pic.twitter.com/Rwv8DRIxDP

While DC ultimately decided to go with a more traditional depiction of Aquaman, things took a turn following issue #25 of Aquaman. Cast out as King of Atlantis, Arthur now resembles Walker’s original designs more closely, though it’s currently artist Stjepan Šejić who is providing the series’ interior artwork.
