Anime Series Like Laid-Back Camp

After moving, Nadeshiko decides to go see Mount Fuji. She manages to bike pretty far, but has to turn back because of the weather and ends up fainting. When she wakes up, she finds herself somewhere she has never been and no way to find her way back. It is in this wilderness where she is saved by Rin, a girl who was out camping by herself.

Relaxing and heart-warming, every anime season has to have one. Laid-Back Camp was the chill anime of the Winter 2018 anime season, and if you want series that keep the chill going, then check out these anime recommendations.

For Fans of Scenery Porn

Encouragement of Climb

Aoi Yukimura has loved mountains since she was a kid, but a playground accident left her afraid of heights. Now a timid first year high school student, she is practically friendless until she reconnects with the lively Hinata. As an old friend from her climbing days, Hinata fosters a change in Aoi’s world that leads her back to the mountains she loves.

Both shows love to show off some of Japan’s best scenery. However, while both shows embody the definition of “scenery porn” to the fullest, they are both about watching people overcome their various problems. Sometimes it’s actual mountains, but sometimes it is not.

Non Non Biyori

Asahigaoka is rural village in the middle of nowhere, and for the five students who go to school there, their days are all about keeping the boredom at bay. All of different ages, their ways to entertain themselves never border on normal.

Laid-Back Camp isn’t immediately advertised as cute girls doing cute things like Non Non Biyori is, but it ends up that way anyhow. Like living in a rural area, winter camping can have its boring times, but both shows find ways to make innately boring settings interesting again.

Amanchu

Hikari Kohinata grew up by the sea and as a result developed a deep love of scuba diving. On her first say of high school, her hobby and her relentless cheerfulness sweep up those around her in a maelstrom and they all cultivate a love for diving.

Amanchu and Laid-Back Camp are similar, yet different. They both celebrate nature, but they celebrate different aspects. Laid-Back Camp is all about the beauties of winter camping while Amanchu is about the beauties of sea diving. They are both relaxed series with fun characters, though.

For Fans of Friendship

A Place Further Than the Universe

Upon discovering an old list she made in the last year of middle school, Mari Tamaki, who is now in her second year of high school realizes she is not making the most of her youth. Whenever she tries to do something new, she is paralyzed with inaction. Then one day she meets Shirase, a girl whose mother went missing when she was in middle school on an expedition to Antarctica. Knowing full well it is close to impossible, she works hard in order to go to search for her mother and invites Mari along for the ride.

Winter 2018 anime season watchers got a real treat by having two super chill series that both celebrate the same thing – going outside. While A Place Further Than The Universe spends more time in towns, it does do a fair bit of travel so you see more locales, but not necessarily ones as beautiful as in Laid-Back Camp.

Long Riders

After being enamored with a collapsible bicycle she saw, university student Ami Kurata empties her account and buys a bicycle. Now with her friends, she enjoys weekend bicycle trips with that changes her view of the world completely.

While Long Riders is about cycling, you often get those long lingering shots of the wilderness in the background making it feel quite a bit like Laid-Back Camp. Furthermore, the series also focuses on a very small group of friends that are doing a very specific activity. However, to Long Rider’s benefit, the travel it does gives you a wider glimpse of scenery.

K-On!

Upon entering high school, Yui is immediately entranced by the Light Music Club. The problem is, she can’t play an instrument. Deciding to join the club anyway, the other club members, despite disappointment in her lack of musical knowledge, allow her to join to prevent the club’s disbandment. Today begins Yui’s musical education!

K-On is one of those legendary shows about friendship. Not only are K-On and Laid-Back Camp both distinctly cute girls doing cute things, but they both excel in that respect. In each show, the characters are the star in terms of likability. While Laid-Back Camp keeps you coming back with the scenery, K-On does it with the music.

For Fans of the Simple Things

Barakamon

After losing his temper on a critic, renowned calligraphy artist Sieshuu Handa is exiled to the Goto Islands by his father for a period of self-reflection. There he seeks to find new inspiration for his art, but finds that his neighbors and some neighborhood kids keep getting in his way.

Laid-Back Camp is about a girl who gets lost and ends up winter camping and seeing the beauty in nature. In different yet similar circumstance, Handa is pretty much exiled to a small island where his father hopes he will chill out via small town life, nature, and through the atmosphere of the island. Both shows are about learning what is important after ending up in a new place.

Tamayura

Sawatari Fuu is an aspiring photographer. She spends her time by the Seto Inland Sea taking pictures of her friends. She is especially pleased when she is able to capture tamayura, small orbs of light that appear when her subjects are especially content.

While Tamayura is only a four-episode OVA, it is self-described as a “healing” series. You’ll know exactly why when you watch it. Like Laid-Back Camp, it is cute, light, and relaxed in everything it does. While Laid-Back Camp has some friendship themes, it is more about scenery porn than most anything else while Tamayura revels in the small things like seemingly small social interactions.

The Flying Witch

15-year-old Makoto Kowata is a witch, but her skills in it leave something to be desired. To further train her craft, she moves to rural Aomori, Japan to live with her cousins. This area, rich in nature, is the perfect place to commune with nature and hone her craft.

You’d be mistaken if you thought The Flying Witch was something like Little Witch Academia. Instead of being just ridiculous magic as many supernatural anime series are, The Flying Witch takes more of a stance of magic through a connection with nature. While Laid-Back Camp showcases the magic of winter camping, The Flying Witch shows off the literal magic to be done in one of Japan’s most rural provinces.
