• Russo Bros. Tease the ‘High Cost’ of Undoing Infinity War’s Ending
    May 01, 2018

Avengers: Infinity War had the most shocking and emotional ending to date in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and according to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, there’s a very high cost if they’re to undo what happened at the end of Infinity War in Avengers 4.

In an interview with Variety, the Russo’s made it clear that they’re committed to the high stakes they created in the third Avengers film and going forward into Avengers 4.

“I will say this: There is a real commitment on our end to the stakes,” Anthony Russo said. “Yes, this is a fantasy world, and yes, remarkable things can happen in a fantasy world, but-“

“They come at an incredibly high cost,” Joe Russo finished. “For us, there will always be stakes and the stakes have been progressing from film to film. And I think you can extrapolate that they will continue to deepen in Avengers 4.”

The Russo brothers’ comments provide a bit of contrast to the comments Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige made last year when he told audiences they should “be careful what they wish for,” when it came to character deaths in the film. While Feige made it seem that any deaths in Infinity War will be for real, the Russo’s are hinting that some heroes that died in the film may be resurrected come Avengers 4, but at a terrible cost.

“Unless you have real stakes, you’re sort of limited in terms of the emotional impact a story can have on you,” Anthony Russo said. “You have to go to very difficult places for the stakes to feel real, for the characters to feel like they have something to lose, for the audience to feel like they have something at risk. What we’re looking for in storytelling or art is emotional catharsis. And that’s not simply getting what you want. It’s getting an emotional experience that makes you feel and respond to it and energizes you on some level.”
