Anime Series Like One Piece

With his dying breath, legendary Pirate King Gol D. Roger let the world know about his treasure, setting in motion the Grand Age of Pirates. Among the many crews that set out to look for the legendary One Piece treasure is Monkey D. Luffy, a young man that has assembled a rag-tag crew to sail the Grand Line and hunt down One Piece.

Getting into One Piece now that it is so long is an achievement, but no matter if you are a long-time fan or an actual bonefide anime hero, you could always need more pirates in your life. For anime recommendations like One Piece, you need merely keep on scrolling.

For Fans of Pirates

Bodacious Space Pirates

Young Marika keeps herself busy with a job at a retro cafe in the space yacht club. However, one day two strangers approach her, claiming to be the subordinates of her dead father, and demand she take command of the space pirate ship Bentenmaru. As an agreement was made after the war of independence a century ago that the ship must be inherited by the captain’s next of kin, so Marika begins her exciting new life as a space pirate.

While these two shows share the common theme of “good guy piracy,” they differ in a few key aspects such as the space setting, the gender of the protagonists, and most importantly, the scope of the world. One Piece is large and interesting, while the scope of the space setting in Bodacious Space Pirates is a little more narrow. However, they both provide good comedy, though One Piece excels in action.

Coyote Ragtime Show

Only days from his release, the space outlaw Mister is broken out of prison by his old partners Bishop and Katana. Upon his escape, he seeks out a girl named Franka that was left in his care by her dead father and commences to go on a journey to find her father’s treasure and avoid the authorities on his heels.

If you enjoy One Piece for its large array of silly, yet awesome pirate characters, there is something to enjoy in Coyote Ragtime Show. While the cast is much smaller comparatively, they are no less interesting. Everyone has their quirks, but they all come together in the search of treasure.

Mars Daybreak

With Mars now almost entirely covered by water, humanity traverses it on city ships that float the open seas. However, with the economy poor and the government corrupt, many have taken to piracy. To combat this, Earth has sent over a special task force to combat the menace. Unfortunately from Gram and his friends, they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and end up on the run with the most notorious pirates on the planet.

While Luffy is purposeful in his hunt and Gram is recruited by happenstance, both shows are about pirates evading the law and, at least in One Piece, searching for treasure. In both shows, they focus on the pirate crews that show you that these people in an innately criminal profession are often a lot more morally upright than the government, particularly in One Piece once the Marines show up.

For Fans of Large World Stories

Toriko

In this world, happiness is measured by what you eat. As such, people are always on the hunt for ultimate ingredients that are gotten from powerful monsters. Those who battle these monsters for ingredients are Gourmet Hunters. This story follows Toriko, a Gourmet Hunter and his chef friend Komatsu. Toriko aims to cook the perfect meal while Komatsu wants to reach the level of master chef.

Both One Piece and Toriko should be prized for creating wholly unique worlds with their own mysteries and wonders to discover. Both of which are actually helped by the wild characters that inhabit them as well. While other shounen shows can have characters with wondrous powers, these two shows really push the boundaries of what is unique.

Granblue Fantasy

This is a world of skies where islands are adrift in a sea of clouds. Gran, a young boy, lives on the island of Zinkenstill. One day, he happens across Lyria, a girl that had escaped the militarily powerful Erste Empire. When they come after her, Gran gets pulled into the middle of it and they both flee the empire by taking to the skies with one destination in mind, the Island of the Stars.

Both shows center around young protagonists that set out on a journey to find something, be it a destination or a treasure. The key difference is how they do it, one sets to the seas and the other sets to the skies, but they both present a wondrous journey for people to enjoy. However, while One Piece tends to travel from one fight to the next, Granblue Fantasy can be more dramatic, but certainly not short on the action.

Hunter x Hunter

Twelve-year-old Gon Freecss is determined to become a world-class Hunter, a skilled individual that perform all manner of dangerous tasks, in order to find out what happened to his father.  However, Gon finds that the path to achieving his goals is more challenging than he could have ever imagined, but in order to overcome it, Gon recruits some powerful friends.

Both shows start off in a similar vein – young protagonists deciding to realize their dreams of being a Hunter or a Pirate. Of course, they soon learn that both come with various hardships, but their friends and unique powers can help them out along the way. It merits mentioning that both of these are popular shounen anime series, but often are more low-key because of the difficulty to get into them. With One Piece it is the length and Hunter x Hunter it is because of the long hiatuses.

For Fans of Unique Character Abilities

Naruto

Orphaned at a young age and ostracized by his village due to the nine-tailed fox demon that was sealed within him at birth, Naruto aims for the top. His dream is to eventually become the leader of his village, the Hokage. However, first he must actually become a ninja and gain strength enough to rise to this pinnacle.

Aside from both being highly popular shounen series, the biggest similarity between these two is the large cast of characters and each character coming with their own unique abilities. In both Naruto and One Piece there are very few normal people, and a huge population of wildly powerful people. Also, let’s be honest, ninjas… pirates… One may be better, but they are pretty similar.

My Hero Academia

Since he was a child, Izuku Midoriya has wanted nothing more than to manifest a quirk, a newly discovered super power that some people develop, so that he can be a hero. Unfortunately, he was not one of those lucky few. One day, Izuku meets the number one hero and his personal idol, All Might. All Might’s quirk is a unique ability that can be inherited, and he has chosen Izuku to be his successor.

Although the scope in My Hero Academia is much more narrow, it does present a large cast of unique and likeable characters with magnificent super power-esque abilities. Of course, that scope of characters is very much dwarfed by One Piece. However, while One Piece is an adventure action series, My Hero Academia is a school action series.

Fairy Tail

After meeting a powerful fire mage named Natsu Dragneel by chance, celestial mage Lucy Heartfilia discovers he is part of the famous Fairy Tail wizarding guild. Returning home with him, she decides to join, a decision that will take her and Natsu on a series of life-changing adventures.

These two shows immediate feel very similar. Instead of a pirate crew, Fairy Tail has a guild that is much larger than Luffy’s crew. However, the size of the crew doesn’t matter, both have great powers and have the ability to help shape the world with their interference.

As such a long running series, there are a lot of anime series like One Piece, do you think another one fits the bill better? Let us know in the comments section below.
