How to Watch The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Anime

At a glance, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya seems like a pretty straightforward series to watch. First season, second season, and a movie that wraps it all up neatly as well as well as alternate side series. However, like many anime series that we have covered in this “How to Watch” series of articles, the show is deceptive. You see, the first season of Haruhi in particular was aired outside of chronological order. Some argue that it preserves the mystery and improves the pacing of the series.

However, watching the Haruhi series in its original broadcast order does leave the audience having to put things together themselves. If you watch chronologically, it will feed the plot straight to you. If nothing else, a chronological order watch makes for a pretty good rewatch opportunity for fans. We, however, will cover how to watch both ways.

Watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in Broadcast Order

If you just want to put in DVDs or turn on a stream, this is the easiest order to follow. You merely need to watch the 2006 first season, the 2009 second season, and the 2010 move, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. The final movie is a good closer to the series and considered one of the best parts of it, so be sure not to skip it.

Watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in Chronological Order

There are some that would argue that watching this show should be like a jigsaw puzzle when it comes to plot. However, there is no shame if you want the plot fed to you without all the confusion, especially if you finished the series somewhat confused. This order will, however, require you to hand pick episodes from both the first and second season.

Chronological order for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series, by episode, is as follows:

(2006) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya I (2006) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya II (2006) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya III (2006) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya IV (2006) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya V (2006) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya VI (2006) The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009) Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (2006) Mysterique Sign (2006) Remote Island Syndrome (Part 1) (2006) Remote Island Syndrome (Part 2) (2009) Endless Eight (1) (2009) Endless Eight (2) (2009) Endless Eight (3) (2009) Endless Eight (4) (2009) Endless Eight (5) (2009) Endless Eight (6) (2009) Endless Eight (7) (2009) Endless Eight (8) (2009) The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya I (2009) The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya II (2009) The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya III (2009) The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya IV (2009) The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya V (2006) Mikuru Asahina’s Adventures (2006) Live Alive (2006) The Day of Sagittarius (2006) Someday in the Rain (2010 Movie) The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya Do I Really Have to Watch All the Endless Eight?

There is a very real chance you are watching this series for the now notorious Endless Eight arc in which it is eight episodes of basically the same thing. However, no, you do not need to watch them all. Watching the first, second, and last of the endless eight block is exactly enough to capture the tone those episodes are trying to convey and what you need to know for the rest of the series.

That concludes our how to watch guide for the main universe. There are a few side and alternate tidbits to enjoy, but they contribute nothing to the main plot and you can watch them at your leisure.
