DC & Superman Stand Up for What’s Right on World Refugee Day

DC Comics has taken a stand on World Refugee Day, urging fans to do what’s right.

In the wake of current events, with refugee outreach and support a more critical and timely topic than ever, DC tweeted an image of Superman reminding fans that its flagship character is himself a refugee.

“Superman stands up for what’s right. Did you also know he’s a refugee?” tweeted the publisher, accompanied by Jim Lee’s variant cover for the recently released Action Comics #1000. “This #WorldRefugeeDay, be like Superman and stand up for what’s right. #StandWithRefugees and @theIRC.”

Superman was created in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster as a refugee that fled the destruction of his home planet Krypton, finding asylum on Earth after crash-landing in Kansas. Growing up as the adopted Clark Kent, the character embodied the potential of the American Dream, leaving his rural hometown of Smallville for the big city of Metropolis and becoming the world’s greatest defender where he fights for truth, justice, and the American Way.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a non-governmental organization that provides relief to humanitarian crises around the world. In 2017 alone, the organization created safe spaces for 135, 598 children worldwide and providing schooling for 1.14 million children. Last year in the United States, the IRC helped facilitate the relocation of 10,665 refugees providing special immigration visas. For more information, please visit their website.
