Batman #50 Overcomes Amazing Spider-Man #1 in July Sales

Diamond Comics Distributors today released industry sales data for the month of July, which points to a clear winner for the month. DC Comics Batman #50 took the top slot, while Marvel Comics’ The Amazing Spider-Man relaunch came in at second place.

DC’s Batman #50 was Tom King and Joelle Jones’ conclusion to the Batman and Catwoman wedding arc, which saw the couple’s nuptials… not go quite as readers expected. Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man #1 was Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley’s first foray into helming the title, which was previously handled by Dan Slott for roughly a decade. That issue reintroduced readers to Peter Parker while continuing the story beats set by Slott at the end of his tenure.

Despite DC taking top spot in individual title sales, Marvel ended up winning out overall in terms of dollar share and unit share. Marvel Comics accounted for 39.07 percent of July’s dollar share and 41.05 percent of the month’s unit share. DC Comics accounted for 31.62 percent of the dollar share and 33.82 percent of unit share.

Image Comics took third place for the month, accounting for 8.52 percent of July’s dollar share and 8.87 percent of the unit share. IDW Publishing landed fourth with a 4.52 percent dollar share and a 3.95 percent unit share. Dark Horse Comics had 2.82 percent dollar share and a 1.91 percent unit share. BOOM! Studios accounted for 1.89 percent of the dollar share and 1.74 percent of the unit share. Dynamite Entertainment rounds out the list with 1.74 percent dollar share and 2.07 percent unit share.

In regards to the top ten titles of the month beyond Batman #50 and Amazing Spider-Man #1: Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leinil Francis Yu’s Captain America #1 took the third place spot; Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s Doomsday Clock #6 came in fourth; Brian Michael Bendis, Ivan Reis, and Joe Prado’s Superman #1 took fifth place; Joëlle Jones’ Catwoman #1 came in sixth; Spencer and Ottley’s Amazing Spider-Man #2 was seventh; King and Lee Weeks’ Batman #51 hit eighth; Mariko Tamaki and Juann Cabal’s X-23 #1 ranked ninth; and Donny Cates and Dylan Burnett’s Cosmic Ghost Rider #1 took tenth place.

While there’s little in the way of concrete conclusions that can be derived from the monthly sales numbers between Batman and Amazing Spider-Man, it’s worth asking if comic book readers in July were simply feeling the matrimonial spirit. Only time will tell what August readers gravitated towards.
