10 Unconventional Anime Weapons

The beauty of all fiction, not just anime, is that your imagination can flourish. However, it is notable that anime has some very strange aspects, sometimes primary among them, the weaponry. In anime, under the right circumstances, anything can be used as a weapon. No matter how unlikely or impractical, they can make it work.

Tuxedo Mask’s Roses in Sailor Moon

Tuxedo Mask is dapper AF, and they could have easily have given him a classy and effective weapon, you know, like a rapier or something. However, he has roses. Of course, his roses are special and can pierce skin, but they’re still roses. He uses them much in the way f throwing knives, but intimidating opponents with roses has to be difficult.

Gon’s Fishing Pole in Hunter X Hunter

Hunter x Hunter is actually filled with a lot of unconventional weaponry, and they all have the same fate –they get faded out in lieu of Nen fighting. However, it is often strange to see a main character with a weird weapon, yet, here we are. Gon, in the beginning, uses his fishing pole as a weapon. It is not just for walloping either, he actually uses it to throw people around as well.

Light’s Death Note in Death Note

Let us not forget that Death Note is literally all about a guy killing people by writing their names down. It is something that is strange, but could have almost been boring to watch. Luckily, as Death Note goes on and more variables are added to the equation, Light does some pretty crafty stuff with his Death Note.

The Papermasters in Read or Die

There is just no one character in Read or Die that uses an unconventional weapon – they really all do. That is because the major weapon in Read or Die is paper. They use it to block bullets, give mean paper cuts, and even be formed into conventional weapons like arrows. It is one of those “one sheet of paper is weak, but many are strong” sort of situations.

Shizuo and Ikebukuro in Durarara

For Shizuo, the unassuming strongman, the world is his literal weapon. When angry, he will grab anything near him to lay a beat down. No street sign, card door, or even soda machine is safe. He might even legit beat his enemy with another person if they are the only thing near hand.

Haruko’s Guitar in FLCL

There has become no more of a classic unconventional weapon than Haruko’s Rickenbacker 4001. Not only is it notable for beating people on the head, but is can open channels to summon anything from light years away. So oftentimes, her beating someone on the head is just her opening one of those channels. Somehow, once you know this, FLCL starts to make a lot more sense.

Mr. 5’s Boogers from One Piece

Of all the weird powers and weapons in One Piece, why pick Mr. 5, an excessively minor villain? Because his weapon is literally flicking boogers at people. To be fair, his Devil Fruit power is to turn any part of his body into a bomb. He, of course, chooses boogers. Some say he underutilizes his devil fruit gift, I say… Eww.

Kagura’s Umbrella in Gintama

Kagura, and indeed all the Yato Clan, use umbrellas as weapons. Sure, they are as good at blocking attacks as they are at blocking the sun, but Kagura’s umbrella is also a gun. Yes, that’s right, it is an unassuming umbrella gun that matches her personality perfectly.

Misaka’s Coin in A Certain Scientific Railgun

Misaka’s power isn’t only good coin flipping skills. She uses her electromaster powers to control electricity, which means she can essentially use metal objects like a railgun. She typically uses coins for this ability, which is both unconventional and highly scientific.

Ryuko’s Scissors in Kill la Kill

Who needs a sword when you could have on half of a pair of scissors. Of course, Ryuko probably would like both halves, but she still works it pretty good. As a show where the major theme is fighting fashion, scissors as a weapon are quite apt.
