Anime Series Like The Irregular at Magic High School

After magic, once thought to be folklore, was turned into a technical skill, schools to teach it opened all over. At one such school are siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba. While Miyuki excels, her brother is placed in a lower class due to his seemingly magical ineptitude. However, he has rather unique abilities that make him quite irregular.

Proof that you can wrap up a harem with uncomfortably romantic elements with a sibling in a pretty wrapper and it will gain traction, Irregular at Magic High School provides some crazy beautiful visuals in a story that is…Meh much of the time. If you are looking for anime similar to Irregular at Magic High School, then head on down below.

For Fans of Weak But Not Really Protagonists

Chivalry of a Failed Knight

A certain selection of people known as Blazers are able to manifest their souls as weapons. To harness these powers, a number of schools have been established to teach these people how to use them. Ikki Kurogane is an aspiring Mage-Knight, but unfortunately is also one of the lowest ranked Blazers around. However, there may be more to his powers than meets the eye.

The synopsis of both series lays bare how similar these two series are. The main character gets into magic school, but is considered very weak after traditional testing. However, they turn out to not be weak at all, but instead very powerful because of your standard protagonist magic reasons. Of course, there is a whole harem that eventually gets gathered along their conquests as well.

A Certain Magical Index

Academy City in Japan is at least 30 years more advanced than the rest of the world, technologically. However, they also have a number of students that are honing their psychic abilities. Unfortunately for Touma Kamijou, he is a psychic rank of zero, but he has an ability that the city’s scientists can’t quite understand – the ability to negate other psychic abilities. Despite this, he lives a normal life until he meets Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young girl who has memorized the entire forbidden grimoires, and she drags him into the realm of the supernatural.

While A Certain Magical Index doesn’t have a huge school focus, it is about a guy that is considered weak due to his powers among very powerful people. Yet, it turns out his power is particularly useful, though not as overly strong as Tatsuya’s power in Irregular. From there, you watch magnificent battles and sit through some really lengthy and occasionally tedious dialogue until it culminates with a showy battle. However, there is less of a harem and romance focus in A Certain Magical Index.

Quanzhi Fashi

One day, Mo Fan found himself transferred to a new universe. In it, magic has replaced science, but he is still the son of a poor laborer and a step-brother to his crippled step-sister. Mo Fan is determined to enter magic high school to repay his father for his hard work, but rumors spread about his poverty and limited magic ability. However, after harnessing the fire ability as well as a rare lightning ability, his dual abilities make him formidable.

Despite having a touch of isekai, Quanzhi tells a similar story to Irregular at Magic High School. A guy gets into magic high school, people call him weak, his true power is not weak at all but is in fact stronger than most. There is also a light romance focus to it as well.

For Fans of Magical High Schools

Akashic Record of Bastard Magic Instructor

Sistine is a dedicated student at the magical academy where she hones her skills. She eventually hopes to solve the great mystery of the Sky Castle, but when he teacher retires, the replacement, Glenn, turns out to be a lazy bastard. How is it this incompetent man was hand-picked as the best magician in the academy?

Unlike Irregular, the weakling is not the student, but rather the instructor. Yet, both males limit their power for various reasons, but still bring it out every time a jar needs opened or an ass needs whooped. This is essentially a series where Tatsuya becomes a teacher, to put it simply.

Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero

Several selected members from Earth were chosen and sent to other worlds. Only about half of them returned, with many who did bringing back several trinkets. For Akatsuki, what he brought back was not a trinket, but the daughter of the demon lord he defeated.

Both series feature “siblings” going to the same magical high school together with the same dynamic. I say “siblings” because they aren’t technically siblings in Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero. However, they both end up top performers and have to deal with all the challenges that come with that.

The Asterisk War

Ayato Amagiri just got accepted to an elite academy for Genestella – a new breed of humans with amazing skill. Through duels at this school, the students learn to better control their powers. Unfortunately, due to some unfortunate peeping accusations, his new school life is off to a rough start.

Both follow new male students to an academy where they appear to be weak and have various flaws, but are actually as beefy a protagonist as any anime protagonist. Furthermore, both have a big emphasis on harem collecting and a little ecchi as well.

For Fans of Flashy Battles

God Eater

Humanity has been pushed back to the edge of extinction by the fierce man-eating monster known as Aragami. While they feature immunity to traditional weapons, special cell infused humans called God Eaters have the power to fight them. However, can these fighters beat the monsters before humanity is destroyed?

While much of God Eater’s plot has little to do with Irregular at Magic High School, it does feature really showy battles, teens with specific powers, and characters involved in scientific research. Really what you get is a lot of the same tropes in a similarly beautiful package, but with a more early Attack on Titan-esque plot instead.

Strike The Blood

Kojou Akatsuki was a normal high school student, but his normal life comes to an end when an encounter with a vampire leaves him with magnificent abilities. As it turns out, he is the once thought mythical fourth primogenitor, whose power is immense. Fearing the destructive potential of his powers, the Lion King Organization dispatches sword-shaman Yukina to monitor him and kill him if he becomes a threat. Unfortunately, she is not the only one with eyes on him.

While Strike the Blood features more supernatural elements to it, in both series you get worlds that are filled with magic. Both series feature action and romance, but they are also pretty ecchi at times. However, when it comes down to fighting, you can see where the budget went.

Kaze no Stigma

Kazuma Yagami is a Fuujitsu user able to control the wind. However, this ability led to banishment from his family home for not being able to control fire. Years later when he returns home, it leads to conflict, but worse yet, several members of his family have been killed by Fuujitsu. Now he must discover the true identity of the killer.

In both series, a tough childhood has transformed the protagonist into a laid back sort of character that appears weak, but actually has a finely cultivated power.  While Kaze no Stigma isn’t a school-focused series, it does feature a lot of the same flashy elemental battles that you see in Irregular.
