Inaugural festival takes place in Hollywood in October The inaugural "Animation is Film" festival announced its initial competition film lineup on Friday. The films screening in competition include Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU's Lu over the wall anime film and Studio Ponoc and Hiromasa Yonebayashi's Mary and The Witch's Flower anime film. The screening will mark the North American premiere of Mary and The Witch's Flower. The festival also stated that the screening would be the North American premiere of Lu over the wall, but the film has already screened at Dallas' AnimeFest convention and at Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival, and will also compete at Ottawa International Animation Festival later this month. The Animation is Film festival will announce the full lineup on September 20. Tickets will also go on sale on the same day. New series to debut in Monthly Shonen Magazine in November The October issue of Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine announced on September 6 that Capeta creator Masahito Soda will begin a new manga serialization in the magazine's December issue, which will ship in November. The launch of this manga will mark four years since he finished Capeta. Soda began his most recent manga The Tenth Prism in 2014, and the 12th and final volume shipped on February 28. Crunchyroll published the manga digitally simultaneously with the Japanese release. Soda launched his Capeta series in 2003, and he ended it in 2013. The manga won the Kodansha Manga Award in the Best Shōnen Manga category in 2005. The series inspired a 52-episode television anime series in 2005-2006 from Studio Comet.

Writer Christopher Priest and artist Pete Woods have joined Justice League. DCComics.com announced that the Eisner Award-nominated Deathstroke scribe and Action Comics artist will take over Justice League starting with issue #34. Justice League #34 will set into motion the “Lost” storyline, in which “the Justice League is left reeling after a sleep-deprived Batman makes an error that proves costly.“ According to Priest, he will take a “what if these characters actually existed in the real world?” approach to the team. “Is the Justice League still relevant?” he posited. “What are their goals and how do we define them? Super Sons may have been cancelled, but Superboy and Robin will return with an all-new adventure later this summer. DC Comic’s Director of Publicity Michael Shelling announced on Twitter that Peter Tomasi will be writing a 12-issue max-series called Adventures of the Super Sons. Sony Pictures gave spider-fans an inside look at the upcoming Into the Spider-Verse animated movie during their Hall H presentation Friday at Comic-Con International in San Diego. One unique aspect of the film is its take on the character at the center of the Spider-Verse itself, which will feature an older, wearier Peter Parker inside the Spider-Man costume.
