My mother’s.

My mum is a fantastic cook. My grandmother taught her to cook authentic Indian food with a family twist just before she married my dad. Not content with learning how to prepare a huge variety of South and North Indian dishes, my mum branched out and learned to cook a smattering of Italian, Spanish and French ones as well.

It was really common in my house to have idli/dosa/upma/pongal with sambar/chutney for breakfast followed by chapatti/puri and channa/paneer for lunch and then Spanish Rice/spaghetti with baked broccoli for dinner and gulab jamuns for dessert. My mum is a perfectionist and every dish would be served hot and perfectly spiced. Not too much salt, not too much chilli powder - everything was perfect…mmmm.

I’m away from India and my mum’s cooking most of the time now, sometimes for a year or more. I miss her cooking terribly. Just before I come home for a visit, I send a list of dishes I really really want her to make for me. She chooses a few and makes them over the course of the trip, then smiles fondly as I wade through it all with gusto, piling on the poundage.

Nothing beats my mum’s food.
