Without the background characters, some anime series could have never been lifted up off the ground and transformed into what they are today without their animal anime characters.

And you know what? Those background characters don't necessarily have to be human at all!

1. Albert Chamomile

You'd recognize Albert Chamomile as the cigarette-smoking ermine elf from Negima! Magister Negi Magi. His nickname is "Chamo" and is called that throughout the anime. Chamo helps Negi along his journey as the youngest magister alive.

2. Artemis

Throughout Sailor Moon there are quite a few cat characters. Artemis is Minako's guardian cat. He was the one who ultimately woke Minako as Sailor V. He's forgetful, lazy but also very helpful when he is needed.

3. Happy the Cat

The blue cat might not be of much use if we are being honest, but he's always good for a quick laugh and a sarcastic comment. Just like the name Natsu picked for him might suggest he is always in high spirits and has a big smile on his face.

4. Tony Tony Chopper

The small reindeer with the big hat and the blue nose has proven himself to be a worthy member of the Straw Hat Pirates. Even though he often acts like a child and somehow even resembles Luffy himself, he is still a good friend and would do anything for the crew members.

5. Blair

Soul Eater's very own neko. Of course she can turn into a human, but she loves staying in cat form. In human form she is a busty sexual woman who has a habit of bringing lots of attention.

6. Dr. Gel

If you couldn't tell just by looking at him, Dr. Gel is Gorillian which is a space gorilla race from the anime Space Dandy. He's a very serious character who is a brilliant scientist.

7. Hamtaro

Hamtaro is a courageous Ham-Ham yet he's very innocent about a lot of things. It's an absolutely adorable character that you should introduce to your children!

8. Monokuma

Ever wondered how your teddy bear might look like if it turned evil? Well, look no further since Danganronpa might give you the answer you were looking for.

9. Panda

Shirokuma Cafe is one of the weirdest yet entertaining anime of the last couple of seasons. Its characters are charming, lovely and. Picking just one of them was a hard task, but Panda definitely deserves an honorable mention on this list.

10. Korin

You'll recognize Korin from the anime Dragon Ball Z. Korin is a wise 800 year-old cat that lives on the top of a giant tower. He is also a martial arts master.

11. Kirara

Kirara is the cute yet fierce nekomata, a twin-tailed "domestic" cat from the anime InuYasha. Kirara's second form is of a large cat resembling a saber-toothed cat. Flames sprout from her feet and tail and her demonic powers make her the strongest of demons.

12. Kon

This little guy is a mod soul which is a soul placed into some other body in terms of keeping the soul from vanishing. Kon is basically just in Bleach for the comedic relief. He's a human soul trapped in a stuffed lion.

13. Meowth

Meowth is the only pokemon that can talk. He works for Team Rocket, the trio of Jesse, James and himself. Meowth is very ambitious and has always made himself clear as to what he wants in life.

14. Akamaru

Who would be a better pick than the always loyal Akamaru from Naruto? As Kiba's companion he has proven himself to be a great partner both in everyday life and on the battlefield. Just like Kirara he too has two different sides.
