10 Time American Superheroes Ruined by Japanese Anime

America has had plenty of experience in taking awesome Japanese anime and making terrible adaptations of them.

However, Japan has also borrowed some American superheroes, and desecrated it in much the same fashion.

Here are 10 crazy anime adaptations of American properties.

1. Batman: Gotham Knight

Why did it suck so bad? Mostly because so few of the chapters dealt directly with Batman. Instead, none of these six chapters are even slightly tied to each other.

Only two chapters include Batman fighting named villains, and they're not nearly enough to save this boring, disjointed mess.

2. Powerpuff Girls Z

The original Powerpuff Girls cartoon was simply animated but cleverly written, genuinely funny, and massively pro girl power.

However, the anime adaptation goes in the other direction, opting to make the three girls look more like ordinary girls.

3. Wolverine

Wolverine is a slender hero with a mullet; despite his muttonchops and claws, he's nothing like the Wolverine we know.

But the plot, while taken from the comics, is rendered paper-thin and riddled with repetitive, uninspired fight scenes.

4. Iron Man

A number of Marvel's superheroes have the well-known comic heroes traveling to Japan to meet new allies and defeat new foes.

When Tony Stark branches his company into Japan, he is opposed by the nefarious Zodiac organization.

5. X-Men

The X-Men are reunited in Japan. There, they confront the U-Men, a lunatic cult that steals and transplants mutant organs to further strengthen their own army, and the battle for justice is on.

6. Highlander: The Search for Vengeance

The anime adaptation was a soulless retread of both the original Highlander movie and Vampire Hunter D.

It sounds kind of all right, but then you watch it, and clearly this is a soulless cash-in without an ounce of creativity.

7. Witchblade

The Witchblade anime certainly kept the boobs and action, but it's just pretty tough to care about the story when the kid is literally careening off her mother's enormous breasts.

8. Supernatural: The Animation

While Supernatural is a highly successful series, the anime adaptation adds a few new enemies and characters and gives it an overall anime charm.

9. Mutant Turtles: Choujin Densetsu-hen

This new Mikey, Leo, Don and Raph looked downright monstrous, with weird snouts and eyes right out of the uncanny valley.

It's like the Power Rangers after being dipped in acid. As in, it's the stuff of nightmares and we never want to have to look at it again.

10. Stitch!

The anime series starring the beloved Disney characters from Lilo and Stitch are also not too surprising. The style and Stitch's mascot-like appearance make it perfect for a Japanese adaptation.

Beloved superheroes becoming unrecognisable messes, the anime adaptations are not always what you'd expect.
