Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Films Inspire Manga Spinoff

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy have been given the manga treatment with Kōhei Uchida’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy Rush.

Based on the hit film franchise from Marvel Studios, the first chapter of the manga was released on DeNA’s free Manga Box mobile app this week. New chapters are then expected to be added every Wednesday until the story is complete. You can check out a preview of the first chapter in the gallery below.

Earlier this year, Uchida’s Guardian of the Galaxy manga won the Marvel Special Prize manga contest held by Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine. Galaxy Rush is a serialized version of his winning submission.

The story involves the team entering the Galaxy Rush, a dangerous space race that allows the use of weapons. The contest takes place in the realm of Vanaheim, home to the character Hogun, and previously seen in Thor: The Dark World. Peter Quill, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon, Baby Groot and Gamora will appear in the series.

Galaxy Rush takes place in the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The first film was released in 2014 with the sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hitting theaters in May of 2017. A third installment of the franchise is currently in development with director Jame Gunn attached.
