DC Comics’ Dan DiDio and Jim Lee confirmed at a Meet the Publishers panel at New York Comic Con today that the long-running Action Comics line will be getting a celebration befitting the series’ upcoming #1000 milestone.

The celebration kicks off with a new hardcover book that celebrates the 80th anniversary of Action Comics. The book will revisit major moments in Action Comics history, like the introduction of Superman, Supergirl, Brainiac and the Fortress of Solitude.

The book will also include numerous classic Superman stories, as well as literary essays from the likes of Jules Feiffer, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1986 as an editorial cartoonist, and Paul Levitz, among others. Also included is a poster that incorporates all 1000 Action Comics covers, as well as an unpublished ‘40s Superman story thought to have been written by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Action Comics #1000 itself will be an oversized issue written by Pete Tomasi and Dan Jurgens that will draw on all kinds of talent from the comics industry, including a Superman story written by Geoff Johns and Richard Donner.

Action Comics is the longest-running superhero comic book series in publication. The series started in 1938 when Joe Shushter and Jerry Siegel created the character who would go on to become Superman. Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1, an issue that has gone to become one of the most sought-after comics in history.
