Saga Film or TV Series May Be Possible in ’15 Years,’ Says Brian K. Vaughan

Esteemed comic book writer Brian K. Vaughan is back in the spotlight right now, thanks in large part to Marvel’s new Runaways show on Hulu. In addition to that series (which he co-created for Marvel Comics with artist Adrian Alphona), Vaughan is perhaps best known for his and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man and his and Fiona Staples’ Saga, the latter of which tells the story of a woman named Alana trying to reunite her family while on the run from an intergalactic war. All three are widespread successes in the comic book world, but only Runaways has made the leap to the small screen. Y currently has a show in production, while Saga has been considered by Vaughan to just be straight-up unadaptable.

That, however, was some years ago, and though he still hasn’t changed his stance, it does appear to have softened somewhat. Speaking with Hollywood Reporter, Vaughan said he considers his work with Staples “something that celebrates what only comics can do, which is the scope beyond a Hollywood blockbuster in terms of the visuals…I would rather just keep my head down and keep making a great comic book, then get out there and chase a great adaptation.” It’s not that he’s opposed to the idea of a Saga film or series, but thinks that if that were to happen, it would be 15 years from now, at which point the technology might be able to do the comic justice.

But, as the writer points out, he also didn’t think that Runaways was possible to successfully adapt to television 15 years ago, and look at it now. Maybe it’ll take a shorter time for Saga to hit live action than we think…
