• Anime Series Like High School DxD

Average pervert Issei Hyoudou has done nothing productive with his life save for dreaming of attracting a harem. Things are looking up when a girl asks him on a date, but unfortunately she turns out to be a fallen angel and brutal kills him. However, he gets a second chance at life when a classmate (and devil) revives him to be her servant.

High School DxD is rather notorious in the anime community for reasons that should be pretty obvious. However, while those “reasons” may put off many more dignified anime fans, it is surprising how okay of an anime series it really is. Not top-tier, but certainly not the bottom-tier harem trash people think it. Whether you liked the plot, the characters, or the “plot,” we have anime recommendations for you!

For Fans of Boobs and Battle

    Akame ga Kill

Tatsumi is a naive boy from a rural village that makes the trip to the city in order to join the military and help his hometown. However, after he is rejected, he ends up joining Night Raid, a group of assassins part of a revolutionary movement to overthrow the government. From there, he must fight a brutal and increasingly bloody shadow war.

While these two series are often seen as very different because of their tone, they actually have a lot in common. You have your standard normal boy who, through circumstance, is dragged into a war between two factions. Both of these factions just happen to have a lot of women that take interest in him. Of course, Akame ga Kill is notable for not being attached to its characters.

    High School of the Dead

It happened suddenly. The dead rose and threw Japan into chaos. In the high school of Takashi Kimuro, the situation forced him to kill his bitten best friend and protect the man’s girlfriend, Rei. As they narrowly escape the school with a few others, they find the real survival just beginning.

Both series feature your standard normal guy who goes from somewhat perverted to not completely useless like they are flipping a switch. They are put in a battle circumstance where the stakes seem pretty high, especially in High School of the Dead, but end up having the power of harem to protect all the good looking and amply stacked ladies.

One day, completely useless college student Minato Sahashi collides with a beautiful girl named Musubi. She is a Sekirei, a powerful humanoid that descended to earth. She is fleeing from two of her own kind and suddenly kisses Minato to awaken her true power. Due to his special genes, Musubi asks Minato to stay by her side and fight in a survival game between the Sekirei. The winner gets to ascend to the higher sky, but the fate of the Earth might just hang in the balance as well.

Both of these series feature a sort of battle going on in the world, and while the fights are occasionally really interesting to watch, make no mistake that it isn’t always the action they want to you watch. Often in both shows, it is the chest physics they really want your eyes on.

    For Fans of Supernatural Harems

    Rosario + Vampire

Due to his bad grades, Tsukune Aono was unable to get into any good high schools. However, at the last minute, he was accepted to Youkai Academy. Unfortunately for him, it is a high school for werewolves, vampires, and other monsters. With the help of a vampire and some other new girl friends that take a liking to him, Tsukune tries to hide his human status from his classmates.

High School DxD is actually a lot more like what Rosario + Vampire should be like if the story followed its source material. Of course, there is more fan service in High School DxD, and that’s saying a lot since it is prevalent in Rosario + Vampire as well. Regardless, you get a lot of cute girls of various supernatural origin in both.

    Monster Musume

With his parents abroad, Kimihito Kurusu is living the quiet alone life. Or rather, he was until an incompetent interspecies exchange coordinator made him the caretakers of a Lamia named Miia. With a supernatural creature now living in his house, it serves to not only break up his peace, but attract other supernatural beings as well.

You wish there was more than just angels and demons in High School DxD, but just the same amount of perverted comedy? Well, Monster Musume is your answer to that. It has all sorts of supernatural and mythological creatures, and they are all almost exclusively beautiful girls.

    Testament of New Devil Sister

One day, Basara’s father brings home two beautiful girls and introduces them as his new siblings. However, it isn’t long before he learns that these two girls are actually demons. More specifically, the former demon lord’s only daughter and her succubus servant. Of course, Basara himself is a former member of Heroes, an organization sworn to fight demons. However, after developing feelings for them, he decides to protect his new sisters instead.

While there are no angels in Testament, you find yourself drawn into a similar story, except that it is humans versus demons. The major similarity here being that a not completely useless guy ends up siding with the demons because they are not as bad as one was lead to believe.

For Fans of Dominating Female Leads

    Lord Marksman and Vanadis

In fantasy Europe, war is brewing between the countries. One of the War Maidens known as Vanadis has recently launched an attack on neighboring rival Brune. Young archer and Earl in Brune, Tigre, has his army decimated at her hands. However in a twist of fate, she spares him and takes him on as a servant.

While High School DxD maintains a modern day setting save for its supernatural elements, Lord Marksman takes more of a fantasy world setting. However, it does feature a seemingly unremarkable guy and puts him under the thumb of a very powerful woman who has an intense interest in him. Both men get power ups later, but they still don’t completely overshadow the strong female fighters of the show.

    The Familiar of Zero

Louise is a self-absorbed mage at the prestigious Tristain Academy. Unfortunately, she can’t cast magic right and her classmates call her Louise the Zero. One day during a summoning ritual, Louise messes it up again and summons a boy named Saito. At first she treats him as a slave until she discovers a powerful brand on him, the sign of a legendary familiar known as Gandalfr.

Both shows have a guy that ends up close to a slave under the thumb of a bossier woman. The major difference here is that The Familiar of Zero is more cute in style rather than sexy. (The very nerve of them!) So there is not much fan service here, but still some perverted comedy every now and then.

    Prison School

The Hachimitsu Private Academy has always been a prestigious all-girls school that is prized for its high quality education and ridged discipline. However, they are now accepting boys as well as girls. With a mere five boys in the schools, they think they are the luckiest men in the world. That is, until they get caught peeping and have their personal freedoms taken away in the brutal prison below the school.

Enjoy women that rule over men and the men being weak perverts? Both shows are of a similar nature. However, Prison School doesn’t have much of a plot so much as it is a showcase for fan service, that is where these shows really differ as High School DxD does have some story to it.
