When Marvel Comics first began promoting Infinity Wars, the only thing we knew was it would continue the Infinity Stones saga from Infinity Countdown while introducing a secret mystery character named Requiem. Since then, Marvel has released various images teasing the death of a major character at the hands of Requiem, a tease that became a reality in Infinity Wars Prime #1 when Requiem killed Thanos.

However, as shocking as it was to see that scene play out, it still never answered the larger question: Who is Requiem? Also, why has this brand-new character inserted themselves into the battle for the Infinity Stones?

Each issue of Infinity Countdown opened with a one-page prologue featuring a character off-screen having what we’ve dubbed “Infinity Armor” forged for them by a Nivadellir Dwarf. The wearer of the armor was revealed to be Requiem, who then killed the Dwarf after all his hard work was complete. Though they were ultimately short in content, the prologue stories at least provided more context to the overall Requiem mystery.

Of course, being left in the dark didn’t stop fans (and us) from speculating on who Requiem could be. The suspects at the top of the list were Nebula and Gamora, which made sense considering their close connection to Thanos. Both women have grudges to settle with the Mad Titan, and adopting a new persona could be seen as a quicker avenue to victory.

On first glance, the choice of Gamora didn’t quite add up since she was heavily involved in Infinity Countdown as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, fighting to keep the Power Stone away from the Chitauri and Fraternity of Raptors. However, Gamora has become obsessed recently with finding the Infinity Stones after detailing how part of her soul is trapped inside the Soul Gem.

Even with Gomora as a suspect, even more signs pointed to Nebula being under the Infinity Armor, especially after the September solicitation for Asgardians of the Galaxy listed the newly-formed team facing off against her. The solicitation says Nebula will be in possession of an Asgardian weapon powerful enough to rule the galaxy, and the armor created in Infinity Countdown could reasonably be considered of Asgardian origin.

With the teases and misdirections out of the way, Infinity Wars #1 finally got down to the business of unmasking Requiem. But the revelation of her true identity opens up an all-new set of questions to be asked regarding the summer event series, and what her role will be in the Marvel Universe moving forward.
