Ruby Rose Cast As Batwoman in CW’s Arrowverse

Actress/model Ruby Rose has been cast as The CW’s Batwoman, who will make her debut in December during the annual Arrowverse crossover. She’ll then star in her own television pilot.

Batwoman’s arrival was announced in May, with the network later making official its plans for a new television series, overseen by Greg Berlanti, and written by Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries). Berlanti will executive produce alongside Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns.

This version of Batwoman was introduced in 2006 as an openly lesbian socialite who dons a cape and cowl to fight crime in Gotham City. Here’s the official series logline: “Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

Following the announcement of the planned series, word swiftly circulated that Warner Bros. Television was seeking an out actress, of any ethnicity, to play the role.

An Australian model and MTV VJ turned actress and recording artist, Rose is known for her roles in Orange Is the New Black, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, xXx: Return of Xander Cage and John Wick: Chapter 2. She also appears in The Meg, opening this weekend.
