50 best new york city tips for first time visitors 2024 review

Wait to buy your tickets until What to do in NY about two hours before the event. You’ll l see ticket prices drop dramatically as sellers try and unload their unsold tickets. One of my favorite “how to save money in new york city” tips.. It literally takes like 3 bridges, 2 toll booths, and a whole lot of traffic to drive to my house from the city.

While they do reveal epic skyline panoramas, observation decks such as the rockefeller center’s top of the rock and the empire state building’s 86th floor are expensive and packed. Happily, there are some alternatives that won’t break the bank. The big apple has some fine parks and whiling away an afternoon in one won’t cost you a dime. Opt for the route that takes you through sheep meadow, past the bethesda fountain, around the lake and the boathouse and out by the metropolitan museum of art.

I was so glad to have my insurance so I knew it wasn’t going to be a big bill when I got home. I’ve heard too many stories of travel friends who’ve had unexpected accidents or came down with an illness like appendicitis while traveling abroad. And with the price of american health care, you don’t want to roll the dice for the sake of $50 or $100 for coverage.

It goes from 34th street down to the meatpacking district (and vice versa). Lined with overlooks, gardens, public art, food stalls, and greenery, this walk is one of the best things to do in the city, especially on a nice day. Go for a walk, sit with a book, and people-watch — the high line is a must-see and a true favorite among locals.

There are tons of amazing shows here from grand musicals to traditional shakespeare to offbeat shows. There’s nothing better than witnessing nyc theater, and it’s such an integral part of life here you should check it out. Current highlights include wicked, the book of mormon, harry potter and the cursed child, the lion king, and more. Visit the tkts booth in times square to get half-price  tickets.

You can also take a guided tour of the high line if you want to learn more about its history and the history of the surrounding area. Walking across the brooklyn bridge is one of those nyc moments I think everyone should have on their first visit to the city. The bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened 140 years ago and it’s just as magnificent today. Unless you want to walk the length of it twice (for a 3.6km roundtrip), my top tip is to take the a/c/f subway to high street station in brooklyn and start there. That way you’ll have the manhattan skyline in your view the whole walk. Look for the washington street stairs by prospect street.
