Practical tips for visiting new york city for first time visitors

I see this nyc question come Travelling to New York tips up almost every day, but don’t worry, it is pretty easy! The one big caution I’d take is to not  walk alone late at night. Additionally, neighborhoods like chelsea, midtown, soho, central park, the upper east side, and the village tend to be great areas to be around.

Many have weekly free or “pay what you wish” hours, such as frick madison on thursday afternoons and the guggenheim museum on selected saturday afternoons. There’s free entry to the jewish museum on saturdays too. One of my favorite things to do with first time visitors to nyc is to take them on the nyc ferry. The nyc ferry is part of the public transportation network within nyc, so the rides are  only $2.75 per person (same fare as the subway). If you’re backpacking new york city, expect to spend around $80 usd per day.

And finally, one of my favorite new york tips is to take advantage of all the free things the city has to offer! Food alone can cost you an arm and a leg, so this is your chance to save money a little while still seeing tons of the city! Some of my favorites are walking across the brooklyn bridge, strolling through central park, and walking the high line.

The city pass will provide you with access to six attractions in the city at a much lower and discounted price. Usually, you end up saving around 40% off the overall costs of individual tickets. This way, you can ensure you get an allocated time to head straight up to the top while also confirming what time sunset will fall. Honestly, it’s one of the best ways to plan and see new york city and it’s all organised before your visit. That being said, there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to see everything in new york.

Not only will this save you time but you will see much more that you’ve wanted to plan and see new york city. Sometimes the best way to save time is by public transport, but in all honesty, why not walk. The same goes for wearing the right shoes in the rain or snow. Wet and cold feet or shoes that can’t grip the sidewalks on bad weather days are the fastest way to put a damper on what you hoped to do in new york city.

One of the most important new york city travel tips is to download an offline map (using google maps) before your first visit to nyc. There’s seldom any cell service in the subway and having access to a map while you’re en route is invaluable. If you brought a large item onboard place it in your lap.

Most gadgets are designed to work on a range of frequencies and voltages but double-check if you’re in doubt.
