Here’s 15 of the most notorious, controversial, and shocking comic book covers of all time. Sure, one or two of them may seem timid by today’s standards, but that’s not to say that they didn’t cause uproar when they were first released.  Similarly, some of those innocently released decades prior have caused controversy and surprise to those viewing them with modern eyes. By their very nature, superheroes aren't supposed to hold any particular verisimilitude to you or I as actual people.  However, it's hard for society not to internalize these idols as perfect physical beings. Over time, the unrealistic body images for heroes in comics have become more and more pronounced.  Here’re 15 definitive examples of unrealistic body image standards in comic books. 1. Popular culture has had issues with women for, oh, several thousand years or more. So, we're not exactly blowing everyone's minds by pointing out that even to this day, women tend to get depicted as trophies or sex toys for the (male) hero.  But, comics really do inhabit their own category here -- if not in the storylines, then just in the frankly ludicrous way females are drawn. It's not only a matter of relying on unrealistic body standards, but doing it to a degree that we're not sure these characters could even survive. We're talking about things like ... 5.
