Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow Wonderland #3
We’ve all seen this story before: main character gets sidetracked on a quest, offered up their heart’s desire and decide to abandon their quest in favor of the new prize that was found. Eventually, they have to shake off their new discovery in search of the original quest, and life goes on. So with that in mind, I need to hand it to Jeff Parker, Christos Gage and Brian Ching. They may be serving that up in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow Wonderland” #3, but in doing so they’ve created a situation that feels like the main character could actually and legitimately stick with instead of waving it farewell. Parker and new co-writer Gage manage this in part because of how they write the relationship between Aluwyn and Willow. The pair of them relate to one another in such a comfortable way that this doesn’t feel like the typical trap-disguised-as-honey plot. As Willow finds the strength of being in this mystical coven, it’s a scenario where you can believe that Willow would decide to st

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Willow Wonderland #1
“Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Willow Wonderland” #1 by Jeff Parker and Brian Ching follows Willow on her now-solo quest to bring magic back to Earth. The central conceit of Willow’s epic quest in “Willow Wonderland” is that magic is the source of life’s richness, both in artificial, creative endeavors (music), natural beauty (rainbows), sensory depth (flavors) and plain old happiness. This is annoyingly broad, ill-explained, philosophically lazy and contrary to what magic represented in the original seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” However, it props up the importance of Willow’s self-appointed quest and her accompanying self-righteousness. This idea was carried over from the “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and “Angel and Faith” comics, so it’s neither Parker’s idea nor his fault. Nevertheless, “Willow Wonderland” #1 suffers from the burden of this poor concept. Unless Parker gets truly subversive with reader expectations, my guess is that Willow will return victorious and resto
